NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF CURRICULUM AND ITS CONCEPT (b.ed 2nd Sem)

Q:- EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT OF CURRICULUM? WHY DO WE NEED A CURRICULUM? DISCUSS?



INTRODUCTION :-

                                      Curriculum is the heart of the whole Educational Process. it Can be called the pivot around which various classroom activities & the entire school programmes are developed. without curriculum, we cannot conceive any educational  effort.
MEANING OF CURRICULUM:-
The word 'curriculum' has been derived from a Latin word 'currere" which means a 'race course' or a runway on which one reems  to reach a goal. According, a curriculum is the instructional & the educational programme by following their goals, ideals &aspirations of life.

The three facts of curriculum are as follow.

  1. Goals &purpose of education
  2. Process of curriculum
  3. Evaluation of process
CONCEPT of CURRICULUM

  • Traditional concept of curriculum:- the traditional curriculum was subject centred.fixed & Rigid curriculum
  • Modern concept of curriculum:- the modern curriculum is child &life-cantered.The new concept of curriculum caters to all the needs of the child on the fast changing age. it takes into consideration the changing interests of the pupils.

David Pratt,'' a curriculum is an organised set of formal educational or training intentions.



NEED & IMPORTANCE OF CURRICULUM

  1. Achievement of the aims of education :- curriculum is the mean to achieve the aims & objectives of education. without suitable curriculum, aims and goals of education can't be achieved. we must think of knowledge, activities. for example there should be proper curriculum i.e proper classroom, & qualified teachers.
  2. Acquisition of knowledge :- curriculum helps the educ-and to the acquisition of knowledge &skills by studying various subjects included in the curriculum. A student must meet certain academic requirements in order to go to the next level.for example the teacher should provide extra-book other than text-books.
  3. Harmonious Development of personality:- by hormonious develelopment mean child 's development in all aspects- physical , intellectual social , moral & aesthetic. for example i.e sports subjects for the physical development. 
  4.  Development of culture & civilisation:- curriculum helps in the development of culture & civilisation. the curriculum includes all that would helper pupils to become interested spectator of curriculum must lay the basic ground for the civilisation. for example curriculum should be less with cultural activities.
  5. Development of character:- suitable curriculum helps in the develops the right type of feelings &beliefs towards religion, attitude, new values traditions skills. for example curriculum should be motivational & experts lectures in our institutes. 
  6. Development of citizenship:- Citizenship can be achieved through curriculum. its develops democratic feelings & democratic way of life among students. It develops the feeling of cooperation among students. for example  student should be knowledge about fundamentals rights.
  7. Social change :- curriculum is a powerful  instrument for social change& social control. curriculum is a mean through which we can bring changes in the society. for new idea / invention to promote by students.
  8. Awareness & Understanding:- curriculum is needed to provide awareness & understanding of physical &social and environment.  for example N.S.S AND NCC CAMP
  9. Importance for the teachers:- curriculum guides the instruction of the teacher form it, the teacher knows well the  goal fixed up & the program of action. for teacher should be assess under the experts. 
  10. Development of Democratic values:- curriculum is helpful to the students in developing Democratic values such as liberty, eduality, fraternity, justice.
  11. Selection of suitable methods:- curriculum makes the teacher to select suitable methods of teaching. i .e the curriculum from the bases for teaching -learning process. 
  12. Providing suitable knowledge.
  13. Providing suitable activities and experinceses.
  14. Importance for the students.
  15. Importance for parents.
  16. Importance for administrators.
  17. Psychological needs.
  18. Helpful in preparing Text-book.
  19. Better use of Time and energy.
  20. New inventions.
                                            Hense, curriculum plays very important role in education. curriculum is a path through which we achieve our goals& aspiration.
